GUEST LECTURE: NYU liberal studies senior seminar
December 2025
NYU Liberal Studies
I will lecture on the Story Circle Interview Method to NYU Liberal Studies seniors in Professor Leo Douglas's and Professor Peter Valenti's seminar class about a postcolonial perspective in global nature conservation. Students in this seminar consider the experiences of “non-Western” and historically marginalized groups to center a multiplicity of voices, geographies, and identities that significantly inform the intersectionality required to discuss the study and management of global nature conservation.
Conference workshop: intentionally non-strategic: practicing democracy as we plan for the future
October 2025
Imagining America National Gathering at New Mexico State University
This session will explore the University of Richmond’s Bonner Center for Civic Engagement (CCE)’s recent joyful and “non-strategic” planning process, a model of deep community engagement from inception to completion. In this session, we will highlight the community-engaged methodologies employed, including story circles with over 100 participants spanning students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners, and Data Labs, a community-engaged analysis method developed at the University of Richmond. Participants will be invited to experience how the CCE intentionally involved individuals across different roles in the planning and execution of the attunement process, fostering a sense of collective ownership. The result is a plan that is less marching orders and more an invitation to future action grounded in what we stand for. This case study offers valuable insights for IA network members seeking to implement a collaborative and community-driven strategic planning process within their centers and programs. Participants will be invited to explore the applicability of this democratically inclined planning process to their own institutional contexts, at any scale.
